Brand ideation

The Trust was established to encourage and support arts and cultural life in the Lakes District in ways that will enrich the quality of life of residents and that will contribute to the cultural, social and economic vitality and resilience of the District.

The brand identity needed to embody the unification of the fragmented arts community of the Southern Lakes. The idea was to depict the weaving together of this vibrant diverse group and yet capture the creative inspiration that is intrinsic to them all. We achieved this by looking at traditional art of Tukutuku – ornamental latticework. This design is usually found adorning the walls of wharenui, Māori meeting houses, telling the stories of the local people from generation to generation. The result was a stylised icon that reflects both the woven Tukutuku and the creative spark.
